How to use FreeWay

Choose your device to view the appropriate tutorial.

Tutorial 1 — Getting Started

Sign in and find your way around FreeWay.

  1. Step 1

    Open FreeWay

    The public FreeWay homepage with the Get Started button.

    Load the FreeWay homepage in your browser. The homepage explains what the platform does and links to sign in.

  2. Step 2

    Sign in

    The FreeWay authentication screen.

    Choose Get Started or Sign in, then authenticate with your email or Google account.

  3. Step 3

    The Dashboard opens automatically

    Dashboard overview with metric tiles.

    After a successful sign in FreeWay lands on the Dashboard, which summarises your current site, recent runs and 30 days of daily traffic summaries.

  4. Step 4

    Explore the main navigation

    Sidebar navigation on desktop.

    The left sidebar lists every workspace: Live Flow, Site Builder, Site Model, Compare, Traffic Analytics, Flow Planner, Simulation Setup, Vision Calibration, FreeWay AI, Optimization, Reports, Support and Settings.

  5. Step 5

    Select the feature you want to use

    Most projects start in Site Builder to map a location, then move to Simulation Setup and Live Flow.

Tutorial 2 — Building a Site

Map a real location and turn it into a FreeWay site.

  1. Step 1

    Open Site Builder

    Site Builder with the satellite map and drawing tools.

    Click Site Builder in the sidebar. The satellite map and the drawing toolbar load together.

  2. Step 2

    Search for the desired location

    Address search with geocoded suggestions.

    Type an address, place name or coordinates into the search box above the map and press Enter.

  3. Step 3

    Confirm the correct location

    Pick the matching result from the suggestion list. The map flies to that position and centres the view.

  4. Step 4

    View the satellite map

    Satellite imagery framing the area of interest.

    Scroll to zoom and drag to pan until the whole area of interest is visible on screen.

  5. Step 5

    Select the site boundary

    Boundary polygon drawn over the satellite imagery.

    Choose the boundary tool and click each corner of the property. Double-click, press Enter, or use Finish to close the polygon.

  6. Step 6

    Use automatic detection where available

    Where map data exists, FreeWay pre-populates roads and access points inside your boundary so you do not have to trace everything by hand.

  7. Step 7

    Correct the features manually

    Editing roads and zones with the drawing tools.

    Use the road, zone and point tools to add or fix roads, buildings, sidewalks, parking, drop-off areas, entrances, exits and signals. Hold Space to pan while a tool is active.

  8. Step 8

    Review the site

    Check lane counts, one-way directions, speeds and parking capacity. Anything missing here will be missing from the simulation.

  9. Step 9

    Generate the Site Model

    Site Model generated from the drawn geometry.

    Press Generate Site Model. FreeWay converts your drawing into a routable network of nodes and edges and confirms with a Site Model Generated message.

Tutorial 3 — Creating a Site Model

What the Site Model contains and how to review it.

  1. Step 1

    Open Site Model

    Site Model summary of mapped infrastructure.

    The Site Model view shows the structured representation FreeWay simulates on: roads with lanes and speeds, buildings, sidewalks and pedestrian areas, parking with bay counts, entrances, exits, kerbside zones, transit stops and signals.

  2. Step 2

    Review the network

    Roads become edges, junctions and access points become nodes. Vehicles route across this graph, so a disconnected road never receives traffic.

  3. Step 3

    Edit and regenerate

    To change anything, return to Site Builder, adjust the geometry, and generate the Site Model again. Your previous runs stay available for comparison.

Tutorial 4 — Using Flow Planner

Plan and compare flow scenarios for any location type.

  1. Step 1

    Open Flow Planner

    Flow Planner configured for the current location type.

    Flow Planner adapts to your location type — office, mall, hospital, university, stadium, industrial site, residential block, airport or school. It only offers measures your site actually supports.

  2. Step 2

    Select the traffic objective

    Choose what to optimise: reduce congestion, cut average wait, or raise throughput.

  3. Step 3

    Choose relevant vehicle types

    Enable only the vehicles present at your site — cars, vans, trucks, buses, shuttles, motorcycles, bicycles, emergency vehicles and more.

  4. Step 4

    Configure traffic demand

    Set how many vehicles arrive or depart and over what period. Demand drives everything downstream.

  5. Step 5

    Pick or build a scenario

    Multi-phase custom scenario definition.

    Start from a template such as Arrival Peak, Departure Peak, Surge or Steady Flow, or build a custom scenario with multiple phases and staggered releases.

  6. Step 6

    Run the scenario

    Run it headlessly to get results quickly, or open it in Live Flow to watch the movement.

  7. Step 7

    Review the results

    Compare each scenario's wait, queue, congestion and throughput and keep the one that best serves your objective.

Tutorial 5 — Setting Up a Simulation

Configure a run before you watch it.

  1. Step 1

    Open Simulation Setup

    Simulation Setup collects every input the engine needs for a single run.

  2. Step 2

    Select the Site Model

    Confirm the active site. Without a generated Site Model there is no network to run on.

  3. Step 3

    Configure vehicle types

    Adjust the vehicle mix and per-type physics such as length, acceleration and desired speed.

  4. Step 4

    Configure traffic demand

    Set total demand, arrival profile and gate shares across entrances.

  5. Step 5

    Choose duration and settings

    Pick the simulated period and the random seed. The same seed always reproduces the same run.

  6. Step 6

    Start the simulation

    Start the run and switch to Live Flow to follow it, or let it complete headlessly.

  7. Step 7

    Review the results

    When the run finishes its summary is saved and appears in Traffic Analytics, Compare and Reports.

Tutorial 6 — Live Flow

Watch traffic move in real time.

  1. Step 1

    Open Live Flow

    Animated vehicles moving across the site.

    Live Flow animates every vehicle on the Site Model at up to 60fps, over the satellite map.

  2. Step 2

    Use the playback controls

    Play, pause, reset and change speed between 0.25x and 30x. Faster speeds compress a long peak into a few seconds.

  3. Step 3

    Filter and follow vehicles

    Use the vehicle chips to show only cars, buses, trucks and so on. Click a vehicle to open its detail panel and follow it across the site.

  4. Step 4

    Read queues and congestion

    Queues build at gates and signals, and the congestion heatmap highlights the links under stress. Live statistics update alongside the animation.

Tutorial 7 — Traffic Analytics

Interpret the numbers a run produces.

  1. Step 1

    Open Traffic Analytics

    Each metric carries a source badge: OBSERVED, SIMULATED, ESTIMATED or MAPPED, so you always know where a number came from.

  2. Step 2

    Read the core metrics

    Metric tiles with data-source badges.

    Traffic volume is the number of vehicles handled. Average speed is distance over time across all moving vehicles. Average waiting time is the mean delay per vehicle against a free-flow trip. Queue length is the maximum number of vehicles stopped in a line. Throughput is vehicles cleared per hour.

  3. Step 3

    Read the charts

    Time-series charts show how demand, delay and queues evolve, which is usually more useful than any single average.

Tutorial 8 — Compare

Test whether a change actually helps.

  1. Step 1

    Open Compare

    Compare places a baseline run next to an optimized or alternative run.

  2. Step 2

    Keep the comparison fair

    Both variants run on the same demand and the same fixed seed, so any difference comes from the change itself and not from randomness.

  3. Step 3

    Read the verdict

    Side-by-side metric deltas between two runs.

    FreeWay reports the delta for wait, queue, congestion and throughput. A change is an improvement only when the metrics tied to your objective move in the right direction.

Tutorial 9 — Optimization

Apply supported improvements and re-test them.

  1. Step 1

    Review traffic problems

    Optimization lists the bottlenecks found in your latest run, ranked by impact.

  2. Step 2

    View suggested improvements

    Suggestions include adding an exit, widening single-lane links, retiming signals, staggering demand and rebalancing gate shares.

  3. Step 3

    Apply a supported optimization

    Applying a measure creates a modified variant of your Site Model — your original stays untouched.

  4. Step 4

    Run the simulation again

    Run the variant with the same demand and seed as the baseline.

  5. Step 5

    Compare the results

    Open Compare to confirm the measured improvement before you commit to a change.

Tutorial 10 — FreeWay AI

Ask questions grounded in your own site data.

  1. Step 1

    Open FreeWay AI

    FreeWay AI receives a summary of your Site Model and latest run, so its answers reference your real geometry, vehicles and metrics.

  2. Step 2

    Ask about your site

    Ask about Site Models, traffic behaviour, simulation results, analytics, optimization options or how to use FreeWay itself.

  3. Step 3

    Turn advice into a proposal

    Use Propose changes to get a structured optimization proposal you can evaluate in Compare.

Tutorial 11 — Vision Calibration

Calibrate the simulation with aggregate observations.

  1. Step 1

    Open Vision Calibration

    Upload imagery or video you are permitted to use. Frames are extracted in your browser.

  2. Step 2

    Produce aggregate counts

    Counts by vehicle type used for calibration.

    Only anonymous aggregate counts by vehicle type are produced — no imagery of individuals is stored or profiled.

  3. Step 3

    Apply the calibration

    Feed the observed counts back into demand so simulated volumes match the real location. FreeWay does not identify individuals, faces or license plates.

Tutorial 12 — Reports

Review and share daily summaries.

  1. Step 1

    Open Reports

    Reports lists 30 days of daily summaries with peak hour, vehicle counts, delay, queue and parking occupancy.

  2. Step 2

    Select a day

    Pick any date to read its narrative summary and detailed table.

  3. Step 3

    Export

    Use Export CSV to take the full dataset into a spreadsheet or a formal report.
